Experience Our Wharenui: Apa Hapai Take Take
Nestled in the heart of Ngāti Manawa’s rohe, Rangitahi Marae stands as a testament to our rich history and enduring legacy. At its centre is Apa Hapai Take Take, our beautifully carved wharenui, embodying the stories, values, and mana of our people. A place of gathering, learning, and connection, our marae blends tradition with modern amenities, ensuring a welcoming space for whānau and visitors alike.
Our History
The story of our marae begins with Tangiharuru, who established his mana whenua through determination and conquest in the late 16th to early 17th century. His journey, Te Heke o Tangiharuru, brought him from Wharepuhunga to Hauraki, Tauranga, and finally Matatā. The mana whenua has been upheld through generations, symbolizing resilience and cultural pride.
Our People
We, Ngāti Manawa, are the kaitiaki (guardians) of Tawhiuau Mountain and Rangitāiki River. Rangipo holds special significance as the place where eels begin their journey to spawn.
Our Rohe
“Ko Tawhiuau te maunga, ko Rangitāiki te awa, ko Ngāti Manawa te iwi, ko Rangipo te wehenga o te tuna.” This pepeha reflects our connection to the land, rivers, and mountains, which are rich with resources and steeped in tradition.
